Vella (“Vella,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) provides a mobile app that helps you record stories, transcribe audio, generate summaries/compiled story content, generate artwork, and optionally purchase digital or physical products related to your stories (the “Service”). We take privacy seriously and design Vella to collect only what we need to operate the Service.
This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, how we share it, and the choices you have.

2) Information we collect
A. Information you provide
Account information (if you create an account):

Transcriptions created from your recordings
Story summaries, compilations, and other text outputs you generate or edit
Artwork prompts and generated images (if you use artwork/image features)
Titles, notes, tags, story metadata you enter

B. Information collected automatically
Usage data: interactions with the app (e.g., features used, screens viewed, timestamps), performance metrics, and diagnostic events.
Device and technical data: device model, OS version, app version, language/region, crash logs, and similar diagnostics.
Identifiers: may include device identifiers or app instance identifiers used for security, analytics, and subscription/purchase validation.
Important: Your recordings/transcripts may contain personal information about you or others depending on what you say. We process that content only to provide the features you request.
C. Purchase and subscription information
If you subscribe or make purchases, we may process:
Purchase history and subscription status (e.g., active, canceled, renewal dates)
Transaction identifiers from Apple/Google or our billing partners
Receipt/entitlement information needed to validate access
We do not store your full payment card details in Vella if payments are handled by Apple In-App Purchase or third-party payment processors. Those providers handle payment information under their own privacy policies.
3) How we use your information

Provide and operate the Service
Record and store your stories (audio) and related data
Transcribe audio to text
Generate summaries/compilations and other requested outputs
Generate artwork/images based on your prompts or story content
Sync and retrieve your content across devices (if cloud sync is enabled)
Manage accounts, subscriptions, and purchases
Authenticate users
Validate subscriptions/entitlements
Provide invoices/receipts where applicable
Improve and secure the Service
Debug, crash reporting, performance monitoring
Prevent abuse, fraud, and unauthorized access

5) How we share information
We do not sell your personal information. We share information only as described below:
A. Service providers (processors)
We use trusted third parties to run the app and deliver features. Depending on your configuration, these may include:
Cloud hosting & database/storage (to store user accounts, stories, transcriptions, images, and metadata)
Transcription and AI processing providers (to convert audio to text and generate summaries/images you request)
Subscription management / entitlement validation (e.g., to confirm premium access)
Payment processors / app stores (Apple/Google) and/or external processors if you offer web payments
Print-on-demand / fulfillment partners (if you order physical books/products, they receive the info needed to print and ship)
These providers may process data only to perform services for us, under contracts that limit their use of your data.
B. Fulfillment and shipping (if you purchase physical products)
If you order a physical product, we share what’s necessary to fulfill it, such as:
Recipient name and shipping address
Product specifications (e.g., book size, pages)
The content/artwork required to print the product
C. Legal, safety, and rights protection
We may disclose information if we believe it is reasonably necessary to:
Comply with law, regulation, legal process, or government request
Enforce our terms, prevent fraud, or address security issues
Protect the rights, property, or safety of Vella, our users, or others
D. Business transfers
If Vella is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, or sale of assets, information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to standard confidentiality protections.
6) Tracking, advertising, and “Do Not Track”
Vella does not use your data to track you across apps and websites for targeted advertising [IF TRUE — keep].
We do not share user data with data brokers.
If we ever introduce tracking for advertising measurement or targeted ads, we will update this policy and (where required) request permission through Apple’s App Tracking Transparency (ATT).
If you do run ads or use third-party ad SDKs, say so explicitly here and describe what data is collected and how users can opt out.
7) Your choices and controls
A. Access, correction, and deletion
You can request:
A copy of certain personal information we hold about you
Corrections to inaccurate information
Deletion of your account and associated content (subject to limited exceptions)

B. Deleting content in the app
If the app provides in-app deletion controls, deleting a story or account will remove it from your device and, if cloud sync is enabled, from our servers within a reasonable period, subject to backups and legal obligations.
C. Notifications
You can enable/disable push notifications through your device settings.
D. Permissions
Vella may request device permissions such as:
Microphone (to record audio stories)
Photo library / Files (if you choose to import or export media)
You can control these permissions in your device settings.
8) Data retention
We keep personal information only as long as necessary to:
Provide the Service and your requested features
Maintain subscription and purchase records
Comply with legal, tax, accounting, or regulatory obligations
Resolve disputes and enforce agreements
Retention periods vary by data type. For example, purchase records may be retained longer for accounting/legal reasons.
9) Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect information (e.g., encryption in transit, access controls, least-privilege practices). No system is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
10) International data transfers
If you access Vella from outside the United States, your information may be processed and stored in the U.S. or other countries where we or our service providers operate. Where required, we use appropriate safeguards for cross-border transfers.
11) Children’s privacy
Vella is not intended for children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country) without parental involvement. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children without appropriate consent. If you believe a child has provided personal information to Vella, contact [PRIVACY EMAIL] and we will take appropriate steps to delete it.
If you explicitly market to children, you’ll want a stricter COPPA/child-directed section and potentially different product decisions.
12) Third-party links and services
The Service may link to third-party websites or services (e.g., printing partners, payment providers). Their privacy practices are governed by their own policies, not ours.
13) Changes to this Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will provide notice in the app and/or update the “Last updated” date above. Your continued use of the Service after changes means you accept the updated policy.
